AEG GHE613CB3 dishwasher error 50 (= Ikea Välgjord)

See the edits below the text for two more possible causes I’ve encountered with this machine, both causing the same error.

This dishwasher is also known as AEG ghe613cb3, or Hygienisk/Skinande from Ikea…

Our Ikea Välgjord dishwasher stopped working last night. When switched on, it would take a minute or so, then begin beeping (three times, then about two seconds of silence). When opened, the display showed error code 50, and the bottom LED blinked.

The manual shows error codes 10, 20 and 30 but no 50.

I found the needed information on this (Dutch) site. Error 50 might mean that the pump is somehow obstructed, possibly by a shard of a plate or (in my case) a large piece of [insert some unrecognizable piece of food here].

The solution took maybe 15 minutes, possible less than a phone call to customer support would have taken. You need:

  • Torx 20 screwdriver
  • Philips screwdriver
  • Some rags
  • Ideally a shop vac that can be used to get the water out. Otherwise: a sponge…

Steps:

  1. Unplug the dishwasher. Seriously. Didn’t do it. Regretted that. (see below)
  2. Get as much of the water as possible out. Remove the filter from the bottom inside the dishwasher, then drain the water. Shop vac if possible, otherwise enjoy yourself with the sponge.
  3. Remove the wooden front panel: open the dishwasher. On each side of the door you’ll find a small grey plastic cover plate. Pop these off. Open the door about halfway until you can see a bolt through one of the holes. This is a torx 20. Remove these. The bottom of the front panel will come loose, so while you do this, hold the bottom of the panel up. Then slide it upwards to clear it from the dishwasher door. Try not to look at all the grime and dirt.
  4. Under the door, on the bottom front of the dishwasher, remove the four Philips screws. Take off the metal cover.
  5. At the right side you’ll see the pump, rather small. It has two blue wires coming out of a connector on the side. Remember the orientation of the pump.2
  6. The pump can be removed by rotating it and pulling it backwards towards you. If there’s still water in the dishwasher (you probably cannot get everything out), water will wash out into the plastic drain pan. The float at the back will detect a water leak and the pump impeller will begin to rotate even if the dishwasher is switched off.

The pump that you’re holding in your hand.

In the tiny space underneath the dishwasher.

    With cables around it.

So, you really might want to unplug the dishwasher from the start.1

  7. Remove the obstruction.
  8. Reverse the above.
  9. Fill the dishwasher filter hole with water (if you start the dishwasher without water, it will display the same error after a little while).
  10. Try it out.

<EDIT> (20 Jan 2019): I’ve successfully done this twice, but this time, there wasn’t any debris in the pump. I haven’t found any other pieces of food anywhere else. After a couple of tries without finding any obvious cause for the problem, the dishwasher started working again. Since the dishwasher is still within warranty (Ikea gives five years of warranty) and you shouldn’t have to do these kind of “repairs” with a new appliance anyway, we asked for a technician which will come over next week. Maybe he has some tips…
</EDIT>

<EDIT2> (24 March 2019) Completely forgot to follow up on the EDIT above. The technician found a bad seal in the washer motor and replaced it under warranty. He told me that it wasn’t something that happened a lot, but enough for him to have seen it before (as a repair technician).
Two weeks later, the washing machine gave the same error. The second technician (another one) found that one of the hose clamps on reservoir on the side of the machine was badly placed and replaced it. Likely, the machine would leak some water, go into alarm mode, get unplugged, would dry after a couple of hours and work again for a short while.
We’ve had no more issues since then, which is about two months ago.

So, in addition to “something in the pump” as below, you might want to check for small amounts/droplets of water under the machine in the plastic sump. It might be as simple as a hose clamp…

    • Hi, I found a small piece of garlic when I cleaned the pump.
Proceeded to completely clean the washing arms and everything I could disconnect. Found several other pieces of garlic. Seems to decay very slowly :)

    • That seems like it would be enough to stop the pump :). You’re welcome, glad it helped!

  1. Didn’t want to believe this could be the case and restarted the machine several times over. But finally followed the guide and there it was, a shard from a plate that got stuck. Amazing guide! This saved me both time and money and the machine works like a charm again. Thank you so much!

    • I do wonder how things like that can end up there. Seems like common sense there would be a filter of some sorts to keep it from getting into the pump.Clearly there is some way around it…

  2. dear dieter,
i as well have a misfortune connected to i50 error code, although the ikea model now is skinande, obviously a new model – or just a new name.
i don’t know if it’s related to that i can’t find neither to remove the ‘wooden’ front panel nor any grey plastic cover plates to be popped off in order to get to the pump – or maybe i am just not talented enough to find it :D
could you please eventually post some pics where exactly these are located or may I mail some pictures of my machine to you (or get them to you some other way that you prefer)?
best regards and may txs in advance, martin.

    • Dear Martin,

I looked at the Ikea page for that dishwasher, it does indeed look different. I have no way of knowing exactly what the layout of your machine is, or even if the fault codes are similar (though I would expect them to be similar).

The grey plastic plates are just covers for the bolts that hold the wooden front panel (that matches the rest of your kitchen cabinets) to the door of the machine. Yours might not have them. If you download the installation manual (https://www.ikea.com/be/nl/assembly_instructions/skinande-inbouwvaatwasser__AA-2003729-6.pdf) and start looking from step 11, you’ll find how everything is set up. Remove the front panel by following the instructions (working backwards, obviously). It seems it does not have the small panel that mine has at the floor level.

In the end, you (hopefully) should be able to reach a panel that you can unscrew underneath the door, giving you access to the compartment where the pump is. Its location might be somewhere else, though I expect it to be rather easy to reach as it seems to require cleaning from time to time.

Again, I have never seen this machine, so can only guess…

      • dear dieter,
just saw your reply. txs a lot for the link, couldn’t find this doc previously.
in the meantime, i had some fierce discussions with electrolux about warranty and how it can be that an object (glass, porcelaine, wood, whatever) in the pump is excluded from warranty if this object manages to pass two inbound filters that are supposed to prevent exactly that from happening? – it seems to me that this is clearly a construction error, what do you think?
anyhow, i’ll try to find my way on the weekends and i’ll keep you posted.
        br martin

        • Martin,
I have no experience with these kind of machines, but indeed, I can’t imagine why it would be too difficult to filter these shards/pieces before they block the pump.
Then again, there might be a simple reason that I just fail to see…

        • Dear Dieter,

I failed to post the results of my repair attempt, I very much apologize for the delay.
Exactly the same problem here, piece of porcelaine blocked the pump, easy to remove and rebuild the whole thing txs to you!
Kind regards from Vienna to everybody!
          Martin

    • Yeah, we’ve had other issues with the machine (loose hose clip that 2 service techs failed to find – no complaints about the guys though, they did their best and were very helpful) and had to wait for two weeks each time.

  3. Wow, this really helped me a lot! My HYGIENISK (Czech name for this dishwasher) showed error ,50 on the floor and ,5E on the display on the top of the door. I’ve tried this great solution and is now working like a charm :) There was a little chip of a plate. Thanks again!!!

  4. Hello,

Thanks so much, like so many before me, your instructions were correct!
Error ,50 caused by a piece of glass impeding the pumps motor.
Ikea is lego for grownups; just follow the instructions!
I definately second your point about switching the washer off first, before anything. Safety first! Placing a sponge or dry cloth under the pump before opening is also definately recommended. A surprising amount of water was left, which flodded into the drip tray. Thanks again! I am a very happy man :) (and wife is happy with me too!)

    With kind regards,
    Andre.

      • Great that it helped you to get that fixed. I keep being surprised by the amount of response this gets :) Maybe I should add Skinande to the title as well…

        • And yes, if you’re used to a dishwasher it’s definitely not fun to have it fail. First world problems…

  5. Thanks a lot! Glass chips in my case. 😁 Skinande dishwasher. Definetly first plug device off electicity or just switch off the fuse.

    • Boris, great that you got it sorted out. I am really having a hard time understanding how these things (which are big enough to cause trouble) can get as far as the pump…

    • Was there a lot of difference between the pictures of my dishwasher and yours (which is another model)?

  6. Many thanks Dieter, amidst of many general tips on many other sites you blog/advice really stood out and thanks to your guidance I was able to repair our dishwasher (I was already preparing to buy a new one when mine broke down during the first Christmas Day….). It was easy and highly efficient. A tiny piece of broken glass blocked the pump. Happy holidays ! Arne

    • Hi Arne, especially with the holidays it’s nice to have your dishwasher working :) Glad you got it sorted out!

  7. Part of a mussel shell. Thank you so much, Mine is the Skinande model, advice works the same. Great advice nicely explained. Thanks Ivan

  8. Hi Dieter,
Thank you so much for this blog post.
As parents of 19-month-old triplet girls, fixing the suddenly non-working dishwasher after putting them to bed got so much more hopeful. Until I read this page I actually started planning which new one to buy tomorrow. The culprits were two small carrot shreds.

  9. If you forget to turn on the water to the machine (stopcock/valve) then it will give you error/code 10 as well… Thanks for the guide anyways! :D

  10. Hi Dieter,

thanks for this great guide! I had a rubber band around my pump which was successfully remove. However I was not successful to re-assamble the machine. When I try to fill water into the dishwasher flter hole the water always wash out to the plastic drain pan and shows the error code 50 again. Could you please advise how much water exactly I should fill into the filter hole? Or what else can be the problem?

    Many thanks in advance,

    Krisztian

  11. It was my fault. I put back the pump incorrectly. I fixed it and it works now. Thanks again for the perfect guide! I also ready to buy I bear once you are in Budapest.

    • Haha, great you got it sorted out. Although I’ve had the same thing where I cleaned out the pump but still got the error.
We had to ask for a technician and it turned out there was a hose on the side that had a loose clamp. This would likely have been an issue during production.

  12. Thank you. Awesome post! Helped me a lot! Just to the point. (But I didn’t need to take off the front door, just remove the low floor panel below the door/kitchen cabinets…

    • Sweet. The door isn’t much work, but if you can avoid taking of the panel you don’t risk damaging the finish either…

  14. Your guide is to good to be true. Found a piece of glas and a piece of a toothpick in the pump, now the machine is running again. Made our day. Thanks a lot! Laila

  15. Thanks for the directions. I found some hair in mine, but after removing it still comes up with the same error. The pump seems to be doing something (I hear some water going down the drain), or more precisely, it runs for a few seconds, pauses for a second, and repeats this a couple of times and then shows the error. No signs of any bad seals (bottom tray is completely dry). What should I try next? New pump or call technician?
    Thanks!

    • I have no experience repairing these kind of devices except for the one described above I’m afraid. Sounds like it could be the sensor signalling there is too much water while there isn’t. That would explain why it pumps, then starts pumping again,… Just a hunch though…
